EPL: Why I’m converting Saul Niguez to defender – Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel has explained why he has decided to play midfielder Saul Niguez as a defender.

Tuchel said he will now use the Spain International at left wing-back for Chelsea.

Saul has been unable to show his real worth since completing his surprise loan move from Atletico Madrid to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

The Spaniard only made four appearances for the Blues this season and was subbed off at half time in the 2-1 victory over Watford on Wednesday evening.

Chelsea’s left back, Ben Chilwell may be out for the remainder of the campaign as he may require knee ligament surgery.

This means that Chelsea are now heavily reliant on Marcos Alonso to step up but the German gaffer see Saul as the capable of deputising for Alonso.

CHECK THIS:  Benue govt petitions EFCC, ICPC, to investigate Buhari’s Minister, Akume over alleged N4.56b fraud, others

When asked on Friday about the possibility of playing Saul as a wing-back during his press conference ahead of the Blues West Ham tie on Saturday, the former Borussia Dortmund manager said, “Yeah, he’s still adapting.

“He had an early yellow card [against Watford], he was a bit shy to play all-in in the duels.

“For that we lacked a bit of his physicality because he did not want to risk a red card which was a good thing on that evening because we did not want to be one man down.

“I think that he could play in the wing-back role for us.

“Even if we play a dominant game and an offensive game because he’s very strong in arriving in the opponent’s box, very strong in finishing and has good timing to arrive on the second post with his head.

“We sometimes do this in training, that’s why we have the impression that he could maybe be a good fit. Maybe in the next games we have to try it because Chilly is out long term and a lot of games are coming and we cannot put every game on Marcos’ shoulders.”

EPL: Owen predicts Everton vs Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Tottenham, other fixtures

Former Manchester United striker, Michael Owen, has predicted some of the Premier League match-day fifteen games.

West Ham United will host Chelsea at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester United will tackle Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday, while Tottenham Hotspur will host Norwich City on Sunday.

Everton will host Arsenal at Goodison Park on Monday night.

Providing his predictions, Owen told BetVictor: “What a game to start the Premier League weekend! David Moyes must have been gutted to have conceded such a late equaliser to Brighton and West Ham are on a poor run of form at the minute. The good news is that they remain firmly in the top four race, but they need to start picking up more points.

“It wasn’t a dominating victory, but Wednesday’s win over Watford was vital for Chelsea. My only concern at the minute for them is the number of goals they are scoring. Lukaku is still working his way back to full fitness, so they need him back fit and firing.

“This will be a very even game, but I can see Chelsea narrowly edging it, 2-1.”

Commenting on the Man Utd vs Crystal Palace game, Owen said, “The main man, Cristiano Ronaldo, again stole the headlines with his 800th and 801st career goals in the win against Arsenal. It will be very interesting to see how Ralf Rangnick gets on as the United boss and how he manages Ronaldo.

“That’s now two defeats in a row for Palace. They had a few chances against Leeds on Tuesday but to concede in the last minute must be a tough one to take.

“Palace have given the top sides some problems this season, and I don’t think this will be easy for United. I think they will have just too much though, 2-1.”

Speaking on the Everton vs Arsenal fixture, Owen said, “The pressure is well and truly on Rafa Benitez now. Everton’s form is poor but the performance against Liverpool was alarming. They do have a lot of injuries and the sooner they get Calvert-Lewin back the better.

“Mikel Arteta will have been disappointed to leave Old Trafford with nothing. Arsenal were a bit too passive after taking the lead and it will feel like a missed opportunity.

“This feels like a make-or-break game for Rafa Benitez. I don’t think Everton will lose this; I’m going for a 1-1 draw.”

Commenting on the Tottenham vs Norwich City clash, Owen said, “Spurs aren’t exactly scoring at will, but they are beginning to look more solid. I’m going for 1-0 Spurs here.”

Why state courts should be granted power to prosecute drug offenders – Masari

Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has said that the exclusion of state high court from prosecuting drug peddlers is responsible for the delay in bringing offenders to answer for their crimes in the state.

According to Masari, allowing only federal courts to try the numerous cases from the narcotic agencies, aside causing the trial to tarry, also accounts for why there are only few cases of prosecuted drug peddlers in the state.

Masari made the remark when the new commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in the state, Muhammed Ibrahim, paid him a courtesy call at the state government house on Thursday.

While querying the granting of bail to drug offenders, Governor Masari urged the agency to look inward and see how they can reinforce their position. He said, “there are certain categories of offenders that should not be given bail and their offences should be part of capital offences that cannot be granted bail. It doesn’t make sense granting bail to drug dealers, though a consumer is different from a dealer. You can’t release an arm robber on bail but what about a drug dealer who is more dangerous than an armed robber?

CHECK THIS:  Ballon D’Or 2021: Mason Mount reacts to making 30-man shortlist

Consequently, he said there is the need to review the narcotic laws to empower state high courts as well to prosecute drug offenders.

“We are also ready to help when it comes to amendment of your legislation or even the Constitution so that the state can be given a role to play in prosecuting them. As it is right now, we are handicapped. Our role is limited to logistics. We have become chief logistics officers of the state and not chief security officers.”

He said, “the clamour for state court to be included in the prosecution of drug dealers in the state will give them special interest to ensure that offenders are prosecuted in good time. But when you take them to Federal High Court, the lawyers would go there and bail them saying that it is a bailable offence. How can you give bail to a drug dealer who is more dangerous than a bandit? Without drug dealers, drug suppliers, there won’t be consumption of drugs and it will help to fight this issue of terrorism, banditry and all other sort of crimes carried out mainly under the influence of drugs.

“I think it is something you as an agency needs to look at and see how you can make provisions either within the law establishing the NDLEA or maybe if it is during the amendments of the constitution to make provisions for state courts because these offences are many and if you say only federal high court will prosecute it drags the cases and I think it makes justice.very slow to the extent that people are getting tired.”

Governor Masari recalled how a notorious drug dealer in the state has been escaping justice for a long time now. He said the man identified as the leading drug peddler in Daura axis of the state, has become a sort of “Robin hood” as he spends money frivolously within the community for marriages, naming ceremonies and every other thing even while he is killing their people and children.

EPL: Paul Merson predicts Everton vs Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, other games

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, has predicted some of the Premier League match-day 15 fixtures.

West Ham United will host Chelsea at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester United will tackle Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday, while Wolves will host Liverpool at Molineux on Saturday evening.

Everton will host Arsenal at Goodison Park on Monday night.

Providing his predictions, Merson told Sportskeeda: “Chelsea got lucky against Watford this week and haven’t been at their best this week. I’d play Romelu Lukaku in this match – West Ham’s biggest threat comes from set plays and Chelsea could use a player of Lukaku’s build. Chelsea are not playing particularly well at the moment and this game could turn out to be a draw. West Ham United 1-1 Chelsea.”

Commenting on the Wolves vs Liverpool game, Merson said, “Wolves have been up there in the Premier League this season but they don’t score goals.

“Liverpool are unstoppable at the moment, and they will score goals. If Liverpool score twice, can Wolves keep up with them? They have Mohamed Salah to contend with, and I think he’s currently the best player in the world. Wolves have been impressive, but I can’t look past a comfortable Liverpool victory here. Wolves 0-3 Liverpool.”

Commenting on the Manchester United vs Arsenal game, Merson said, “I’m sure Ralf Rangnick will also give Sancho a fair chance. He’s seen enough of Sancho in German football and United have paid a lot of money for him, so I’m hoping it pays off.

On the Everton vs Arsenal game, Merson said, “Arsenal were unlucky the other day, and I thought they missed too many chances against United. They need to come back and win this game – they’ve been beating the teams they should be beating this season, and I think they’ll be able to turn the screws on Everton. Everton 1-2 Arsenal.”

Attack on campaign office: Kano Senators write IGP, finger APC factional chairman, commissioner, others

Senators Jibrin Barau representing Kano North Senatorial District and Ibrahim Shekarau representing Kano Central Senatorial District have alleged that the attack on campaign office of the 2023 governorship hopeful, Jibrin Barau by thugs on Wednesday night was politically motivated.

They alleged that the factional Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, Ganduje’s Commissioner for Local Government and three Chairmen of LGAs were behind the attack.

In a 3-page petition dated 2nd November, addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Baba Usman Alkali, which was made available to DAILY POST in Abuja on Friday, the petitioners drew the attention of Police to the incident and demanded investigation of those that were allegedly responsible.

The petition, which was signed by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, who was also a former governor of Kano, Jibrin Barau and four members of the House of Representatives which include, Nasiru Abdua, Tijjani Abdulkadir Jobe, Shaaban Sharada and Haruna Isa Dederi, pointed out the attack was triggered by the November 30 judgement of the FCT High Court which sacked the executives of the faction of the APC belonging to Kano State government.

It was recalled the Federal Capital Territory High Court had on the Tuesday in Abuja sacked Kano State controlled APC party executives and recognized those of Senator Ibrahim Shekarau-led executives that emerged few weeks ago through the State and LG congresses.

The aftermath of the Court judgement, petitioners averred, polarized the party in Kano.

Those fingered in the petition are, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, Chairman of the APC faction loyal to the State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo; Faizu Alfindiki , Chairman Kano Municipal LGA; Khalid Ishaq Diso, Chairman Gwale LGA; Hassan Garban Kauye, Chairman Kumbotso LGA; Auwal Lawan Shuaibu, Chairman Nassarawa LGA and one Gwarmai.

Part of the petition reads, “You will recall that on November 30, an FCT High Court had delivered judgement in a suit concerning the Kano APC congresses and the said judgement did not go down with those who lost in the case.

“Regrettably, however, instead of fighting their cause through due legal process, these frustrated elements resorted to carrying out the criminal acts mentioned above.

“We have been reliably informed, which information we verily believe to be true and correct that through the night of December 1 to the early morning of December 2, 2021, Abdullahi Abbas, former chairman of APC and five others together with some other well armed thugs organized and set ablaze the campaign office of Senator Barau and attempted to kill those they met at the scene.

“They also tried to burn our party office located along Zaria Road and kill or inflict bodily harm to its occupants. They also passed by our respective residences with armed thugs chanting war songs in attempt to unleash violence on law abiding citizens,” the petition reads.”

While urging the Inspector General of Police to probe the matter, the lawmakers said, “should anything happen to us and our supporters, the aforementioned people should be held responsible.”

Striking Kwara nurses, midwives insist on ‘no pay, no work’

Striking nurses and midwives in Kwara State government-owned hospitals have refused to go back to work despite efforts by the state government to meet their demands, DAILY POST reports.

Findings by our correspondent in Ilorin revealed that the state government has started payment of the striking members who were promoted without financial benefits as of Thursday.

Also, the state government is working towards conducting promotion exercises for those who are already due, while the old CONHESS has been adjusted to 70percent.

However, a meeting of the leadership of the association with the aggrieved members ended in a stalemate as they refused to go back to work while negotiations are still ongoing to meet their demands.

“They said they want 100 or 90percent of their CONHESS or nothing else,” according to the Secretary of the Kwara State chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Comrade Markus Luka, in Ilorin on Friday.
