Why Nigerians Are Yet To Feel The Impact Of The Country’s Growing Economy – Zainab Ahmed

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed has submitted on Wednesday that the country’s economy has been growing consistently.

She stated this while speaking to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Aso Rock Villa which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to her, an analysis of the third quarter gross domestic product (GDP) report for 2021 shows an improvement of the economy and an emergence from the recession witnessed in 2020.

However, when questioned by newsmen on why Nigerians are yet to feel the impact of the growing economy amidst the rising prices of items in the country, Ahmed said it is because the economic growth is yet to surpass the population growth rate.

CHECK THIS:  Sanwo-Olu Reveals When White Paper On Panel Report Will Be Released

“Let me say that, again, the Nigerian economy is growing. And right now we witnessed, four consecutive quarters of GDP growth,” Ahmed said.

“We also said that we aspire to continue to push this growth to the point where the growth supersedes the growth in our population because that’s the time that people will feel the benefits.

“So, we’re pushing the bar at the third quarter of 2021. The average annual growth is now 3.3%. Our population growth is roughly about 3.2%. So, we still need to do a lot more for people to feel this.

“But the fact that the service sector is not in positive territory, it also means that people will begin to feel the difference because it is the service sector that has the first direct impact on people.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has disclosed that the raid on the home of Supreme Court judge, Justice Mary Odili, could have been averted.

The former Nigeran leader stated that the information given by a whistleblower which led to the invasion of the home of the Supreme Court judge should have been verified.

Jonathan called for the immediate review of the whistleblower policy, saying the modification of the policy will curb such embarrassment in the future.

He made this known when he delivered the graduation lecture at the National Institute for Security Studies in Abuja on Thursday.

Jonathan stated that any information given by the whistleblower should be properly checked before security operatives go on to initiate a raid.

“If things are not done properly, people will exploit it to their advantage. People, who give wrong information to the security operatives, should be punished. As much as whistleblowing is okay, it will help to control us. It must be done in a way that will not injure our economy.”

They also asked the Muhammadu Buhari government to set up a joint task force to tackle the activities of killer herdsmen and bandits in the South West region.

Insecurity: Buhari Government Worst In Nigeria’s History – CNG

The Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has described President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration as the worst in the history of the country.

According to the group, the country under the current administration can be tagged a failed state due to the government’s inability to protect the lives and properties of the citizens and provide social amenities for the people.

The  Spokesperson of the CNG, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, made the disclosure at the Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series at the Nasarawa State University on Thursday.

He asserted that all the characteristics that qualify Nigeria to be categorized as a failed state have manifested in the Buhari government in the last six years.

CHECK THIS:  Ghosts of #EndSARS haunt FG’s policies on power, petrol subsidies

Suleiman stated the All Progressives Congress (APC) government has failed in its promises made to Nigerians when it assumed office in 2015.

He submitted that the Federal government appears to have lost control of its territory to bandit terrorists, Boko Haram insurgents, and ISWAP fighters.

Suleiman said: “Nigeria can also be said to have failed as the government appears to be losing the necessary elements of stability which are effectiveness and legitimacy.

“Likewise, the nation has weakened and its standard of living declined, introducing the possibility of total governmental collapse.

“Virtually, all the characteristics that qualify Nigeria to be categorized as a failed state have manifested in the last five years: loss of control of its territory, and of the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force, and inability to provide public services.

“The Nigerian central government has today become so weak and ineffective that it has an inability to raise support, and has little practical control over much of its seaways, highways, and forests, hence there is a non-provision of public services.

“Already, widespread corruption and criminality, the intervention of state and non-state actors, the appearance of refugees and the involuntary movement of populations, have become the order of the day compounded by a sharp economic decline.”

My Son Was Tortured For Refusing To Join Cult – Father Of Late Dowen College Student

The father of the late 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Sylvester Oromoni, has stated that his son was bullied and fed with a chemical substance by his fellow students.

Naija News reports an uncle to the deceased, Perry Oromoni, took to Twitter to claim that his cousin was killed after he rejected attempts by some students in the school to initiate him into a cult group.

He stated his cousin mentioned five names responsible for his injuries before his death, confessing that they tried blending him into a cult.

This is my 12 years old cousin that was beaten to death at a school that cost over 1 million naira.

“Dowen college is a disgrace. He mentioned 5 names before passing yesterday… They tried to put him in cult, he refused and they killed him. Secondary school o,” he had said.

Reacting to the allegation, the school management dismissed the claims that Oromoni Junior was beaten to death for refusing to join a cult group.

In a statement released on Thursday, Down College claimed that the late student was injured while playing football with his colleagues and had informed the management on November 21 of his injuries.

The school in the statement said it is a faith-based college and vehemently condemns cultism and other social vices.

But in an interview with TheCable, the father of the late student dismissed the claims made by the school management, saying that his son was actually bullied and beaten to a pulp for not joining a cult group in the school.

He also alleged that his late son was fed a liquid substance for refusing to join the group, adding that his son suffered liver enlargement due to congealed blood.

Oromoni said: “They even released a press statement. Was the principal there when the boy played the said football game? Can they identify who he played with? Where was the housemaster when he was playing it? The woman too is confused. Clearly, she’s trying to protect the school’s image. But a mother of children wants to hide the truth?

The bereaved added that his 12-year-old son died in a hospital while receiving treatment for multiple internal injuries allegedly sustained in the hands of his fellow boys.

He stated that the five suspects had earlier bullied his son and collected all his foodstuffs and clothes. Oromoni added that he reported to the school but nothing was done.

The bereaved submitted that his late son said the five boys had barged into his room, put off the lights, and beat him up in the presence of other students.

Speaking in a muffled tone, he said: “My son suffered. His birthday is next tomorrow (Dec 4). I’ll celebrate it. I’ll have a cake baked. I’ll cut it on his behalf. The boys they mentioned were also reported to the school last term when they bullied Junior and collected all his foodstuffs; clothes. I have two daughters, one of whom earlier graduated. I had to remove the second after this incident. They asked this boy to describe the sister’s privates and this got to us.

“They put fear in him so much so that, when you ask him, he might keep to himself and say, ‘they will kill me’. This way, we didn’t know what to do. I considered removing him reconsidered since his sisters were still in the school. The new incident came to my knowledge on November 21st after the school called my wife to notify us that our son was in the school clinic, injured. My senior son, who was to make a London trip, came to see us in Warri,” he said.

“The next day, we sent a family friend to help pick up our son since he was the only person in Lagos and take him to the hospital. When he got there, he panicked, pointing out that he doubts it’s a football injury as the school claimed. He said the boy couldn’t stand because his waist was bent and swollen along with one side of his belly. His mouth was black. I asked, ‘is this really a football injury?’ He was taken to my house in Lagos but couldn’t sleep at night.

“I asked my eldest to fly to Lagos on November 24 while I took a trip to Asaba, from where I’d also make for Lagos. On getting there, he screamed. ‘This is beyond football injury. Come to Lagos now,’ he told me over the phone.”

Olunloyo Makes Revelation On #LekkiTollGate, #ENDSARS Protest Sponsors

Controversial Nigerian journalist, Kemi Olunloyo has made certain revelations on last year’s Lekki Toll Gate massacre which according to her was not true.

Olunloyo noted in a post on her Facebook page that she will mention names of sponsors of the recent ‘anti-Buhari protesters’ who stormed Lagos streets claiming to be mothers of #ENDSARS victims.

Naija News had reported earlier that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government of Lagos State has released the White Paper on the report by the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters.

The White Paper released on Tuesday night, however, disagreed with the judicial panel of inquiry and rejected its earlier submission that nine persons were killed at the Lekki Toll Gate when soldiers opened fire on protesters last year.

The Lagos State government in the White Paper described the claim of killings by the panel as “assumptions and speculations”.

Naija News reports that hours after the White Paper was released, some mothers who claimed to have lost their children to the Lekki shooting that led to the death of peaceful protesters on October 20th, 2020, took to the streets to protest in Lagos.

In the now-viral video, a group of women led by @Justadetoun, one of the #EndSARS protesters Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu invited for a peaceful walk, were seen staging a protest in front of the deputy governor’s residence in Ikoyi.

The women who held placards were heard in a video shared by the Guardian, singing songs and demanding justice.

Reacting to the recent development, Olunloyo took to her verified Facebook page to say that she had an encounter with one of the protesting mothers.

According to her, the woman who came to her on Thursday claimed they were rented to protest against the Buhari administration.

The woman allegedly noted that they were given ₦5,000 each to pose as mothers of those killed at the Lekki Toll Gate last year.

He stated that the issue of community policing will start from the local government, adding that insecurity in states is happening because of the weakness of the lower tiers.

He said: “Most of these security conflicts are happening because of the weakness of the lower tiers of government. The local government system that is supposed to interphase with communities directly and prevent this is dead in this country.

“Since the local governments are mainly managed by the states now — because we are told that some states even take their money — I think the states must have strong departments that will coordinate the affairs of local governments.

“And these departments must have regular meetings with traditional rulers and community development committees.”

Meanwhile, the Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday stated that poverty will be on the rise if the country breaks up.

Osinbajo made this claim while receiving a delegation of the Muhammadu Buhari Osinbajo (MBO) Dynamic Support Group at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He further stated that the security challenges across the country would be resolved soon and the country would be stronger and greater.

Osinbajo in a statement released by his spokesman, Laolu Akande emphasized the need for the country to remain united.

He said: “We must never relent in ensuring that we keep to the ideals of the country and we don’t lose sight of what we are trying to achieve here.”
