Argentine club matches are to mark a minute of silence and players will arrange themselves in a “10” formation on the pitch to honor Maradona’s famous jersey number, while special masses will be held — including in the Buenos Aires slum where Maradona grew up, to mark the day he passed away.
In Naples, where he spent part of his career, two statues for the striker are set to be unveiled.
“We’ll miss you for the rest of our lives,” said the Argentine Football League in homage on the eve of the anniversary, with a video of the life, goals, and many trophies of the man nicknamed “Pibe de Oro” (Golden Kid).
Maradona died of a heart attack last November at the age of 60, weeks after undergoing brain surgery for a blood clot.
The former Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli star had battled cocaine and alcohol addictions for years, and was suffering from liver, kidney and cardiovascular disorders when he died.
His death shocked fans around the world, and tens of thousands queued to file past his coffin, draped in the Argentine flag, at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires during three days of national mourning.
He may be dead, but in Argentina Maradona is everywhere.
From ubiquitous mural frescos that portray him as a deity to television series about his life and even a religion bearing his name.
His two goals in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals, which saw Argentina triumph over England just four years after the Falklands War, made Maradona an instant hero.
His rags-to-riches story, stellar sporting achievements, complicated life and dramatic death entrenched his place in the Argentine psyche.
In the cities, Maradona’s name is memorialized in countless graffiti: “Diego lives,” “10 Eternal” and “D10S” — a play of words with the Spanish word for god, “Dios”, and Maradona’s famous jersey number.
Murals in Buenos Aires depict him with angel wings, as a patron saint complete with halo and scepter, or back here on Earth, kissing the World Cup.
Maradona is perhaps remembered as much for his “Hand of God” goal — which illegally came off his hand in what he ascribed to supernatural intervention — as for his second in the same match against England which would later become known as the “Goal of the Century”.
These extremes — “a virtuous goal and a sinful goal” that also reflected Maradona’s conflicted life of virtue and vice — help explain people’s fascination him, according to Latin American columnist Eduardo Galeano.
The “Hand of God” goal, he said, transformed Maradona “into a sort of tarnished God; the most human of Gods”.
For historian Felipe Pigna, Maradona is “a hero with many imperfections” — a mixed bag of qualities that reflects “what it means to be Argentinian”.
An investigation into the star’s death was opened following a complaint filed by two of Maradona’s five children against neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, whom they blame for their father’s deteriorating condition after surgery.
A panel of 20 medical experts convened by Argentina’s public prosecutor concluded in April that Maradona’s treatment was rife with “deficiencies and irregularities” and said his medical team had left his survival “to fate”.
The case is closely followed by a nation transfixed, competing for headline space with the court case of an inheritance dispute involving two of Maradona’s daughters.
Adding to the floor-to-floor news coverage, this week, a Cuban woman who had an affair with Maradona as a minor 20 years ago, accused him and his entourage of abuse, including rape.
Maradona’s second daughter Dalma, 34, has said she will not participate in any of the commemoration events Thursday for what she described as “the worst day of my life”.
“A year after his death, Diego, a creator of happiness, continues also to cause suffering,” the Argentine daily La Nacion said this week.
“Through the sadness over his death, because we loved him so much. And through the evidence of his self-destruction. The great contradiction between public happiness and private suffering.”

Jude Bellingham has been fined N18.5m for match-fixing comments against referee Felix Zwayer
After Saturday’s ‘Der Klassiker’ fixture between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, the English youngster referred to Zwayer’s involvement in a match-fixing scandal in 2005.
Bellingham suggested that the referee should not be in charge of the biggest match in German football after a penalty was awarded against Mats Hummels for handling the ball in the area.
Following a criminal investigation into the matter, the German authorities have now fined the player but spared him a ban. The authorities put out an official statement that read thus:
“The sports court of the German Football Federation has not blocked Borussia Dortmund’s young professional Jude Bellingham (18) for his TV statement about referee Felix Zwayer after the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich last Saturday.
“Bellingham had reminded out of Zwayer’s misconduct immediately after the whistle in the historical context, which had been punished by the DFB several years ago.”
The German authorities then pointed out that the player was fined due to his ‘unsportsmanlike behaviour.’
“The sports court considered Bellingham’s statement to be “unsportsmanlike behaviour” and sentenced the English national player to a fine. Borussia Dortmund and the player accepted the verdict, Jude Bellingham is thus entitled to play in the Bundesliga match next Saturday at VfL Bochum,” the statement explained.
Jude Bellingham provided both assists in the Bayern Munich game as the ‘Yellow and Blacks’ fell 3-2 at the Signal Iduna Park courtesy of a brace from Robert Lewandowski.
Serena William’s inspiring influence on King Richard actor Demi Singleton
This claim is nowhere near exaggeration as the star actor carefully studied every aspect of the Tennis legend and 23 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and followed up on her life on and off the court as well.
Interestingly, Singleton had never quite held a tennis racket in her life prior to her final screening test and taking up of the iconic role. “My mom was, like, you have three tennis lessons to figure it out, Work your magic” said Singleton, only for her to be recalled days later after the final screen read. Yes, she got the role.
King Richard film, focuses on the dawn of the Williams sisters: Serena and Venus’s lives on the court, before they broke into super stardom.
It also flashes back when they shared a bedroom and how their father who was their biggest fan and supporter was desperate to find a suitable coach for their undeniable talents.
Co-incidentally the 14 year old actor, Singleton is exactly the same age Serena Williams was when she turned pro in Tennis which could also mean that, it’s safe to call her a prodigy at this stage.
More than 9 years in child acting, the Hollywood star actor also starred in The Lion King on Broadway playing the role of Young Nala, Simba’s love interest as well as appearing in a flashback as young Serena during a superbowl commercial played by Serena herself.
“Until maybe two years ago, if somebody told me that the score was 40-Love, I would look at them and be so puzzled”, said the 14 year old.
Singleton might not be a tennis fan nor a die hard hard sucker for the sport but her love for Serena Williams actually has little to do with Tennis itself.
“Serena Williams isn’t just a tennis player, she’s an icon. I distinctly remember seeing her play on TV when I was younger, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. She’s not afraid to do what she loves. I think that’s why I’ve always thought tennis was easy, because she makes it look so easy, right down to the outfits.”, Singleton says.
Serena Williams’ influence on the 14 year old would no doubt end in the movie industry or on set as the the King Richard star actor sees her as a role model for aspiring tennis athletes not just females but males also and who wouldn’t really?
The retired 40 year old American legend is the most successful woman to ever grace the court.
Champions League: Barcelona stars arrive Germany for ‘final’ showdown with Bayern Munich
The Spanish La Liga side suffered a setback in their quest to advance to the Champions League knock-out stages after a 0-0 draw against Portuguese outfit Benfica in their last outing.
That result means that Barcelona needs to win away against Bayern Munich should Benfica defeat Dynamo Kyiv in the other group game.
The players departed the Catalan capital and arrived in Germany on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.
Speaking to the Barcelona website ahead of the game, veteran Brazilian defender Dani Alves gave his thoughts.
He said, “The game tomorrow? It’s a difficult scenario but the challenges are for people who are not afraid. We are Barça and we are dependent on ourselves.”
Striker Memphis Depay also gave an analysis of what to expect describing the game as a final.
He said, “It’s our last chance to progress to the knock-outs, it’s like a final.”
“We have to mentally prepare ourselves to give our all and get the result.”
Barcelona takes on Bayern Munich in one of the biggest games to end the Champions League group stage on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.
2 internet fraudsters jailed 14 months each
Agomoh held that she considered the provisions of section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 that spelt out how someone who enters a plea bargain agreement must be sentenced in her judgment.
“Let me warn Olugbemiro and Falana that their participation in any form of crime henceforth would attract maximum punishment.
“However, to serve as deterrent to others, Olugbemiro is sentenced to eight months custodial sentence and Falana is sentenced to six months in prison.
“Each of you shall write and sign an undertaking at the EFCC’s office to be of good conduct upon completion of your jail terms.
“The proceeds of crime found in possession of the convicts are forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria,” Agomoh held.
Earlier, counsel to the EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office, Mr Mabas Maburb and Mr C.A. Okoli had each told the court that the convicts were each arraigned on amended charge bordering on impersonation.
Maburb and Okoli said that the convicts were arrested in August and October in Ibadan, Oyo state in possession of incriminating documents.
According to the prosecutors, Olugbemiro and Falana specialise in deceiving their victims with profiles of famous foreigners so as to gain undue advantage of them.
Maburb and Okoli said that N177,000 cash and 500 dollars were recovered from Olugbemiro while Falana restituted 240 United States of American Dollars.
The prosecutors stated that the offence is contrary to and punishable under section 22(A) and (B) of the Cyber Crime Prohibition and Prevention Act 2015.

Police detain 3 Dowen students over Sylvester Oromoni’s death
Odumosu also tells Punch that two other students of the school linked with the assault, are at large, with those in police custody helping the Command with information on how to track them.
Oromoni’s death has captured the attention of an entire nation, with the Lagos State government announcing the closure and sealing off of the school last week.
The Lagos police boss also says that the school principal, housemasters, and other officials of the Lekki-based school are also assisting the police with information, as the Command launches a full-scale probe into the circumstances culminating in the death of Oromoni on November 30, 2021.
The father of the deceased boarding student had alleged that the JS2 student died from injuries sustained during an assault by five of his colleagues who were hell bent on initiating him into a cult group.
Dowen had however insisted that Oromoni died after sustaining injuries during a football game.
“It is still an allegation until we conduct our investigation. We just started full investigation yesterday (Monday).
“Two out of those mentioned in the viral video are at large while three of the students are helping us to get others.
“I am in contact with my counterpart in Delta State. I spoke with the parents yesterday, we are perfecting everything scientifically,” CP Odumosu says.
There are allegations that Oromoni was bullied and beaten to a coma before his death.
News of his passing sparked outrage on social media platforms, with over 100,000 persons signing an online petition seeking for the arrest and swift prosecution of those found culpable.
Oromoni’s family has petitioned the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, demanding a coroner inquest into his death.
Dowen College parents announce candlelight tribute for Sylvester Oromoni
“The Parents’ Forum is organising a candlelight on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 by 6pm at Dowen College, 18, Adebayo Doherty Road, Lekki, Lagos State,” a statement reads.
12-year-old Oromoni was allegedly tortured to a coma by some of his school colleagues who were hell-bent on initiating him into a cult group.
Dowen denies this version of events however, saying the student died from injuries sustained during a football game.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and the Lagos State government has since sealed off the institution, pending the outcome of investigations.
“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and pray God to give them the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
“As parents of Dowen College students, we are still in shock and could not come to terms with this incident and the accounts so far provided by the school management, students and the media,” a statement from the parents reads.
The rest of the statement reads as follows:
We are, however, temporarily relieved by the swiftness with which the authorities intervened and commenced investigation towards unravelling the cause of Sylvester Oromoni’s death.
We urge the school management team and other stakeholders to fully cooperate with the authority in the ongoing investigation.
While we would have loved to bring Sylvester back, if humanly possible, unravelling the cause of his death and bringing whoever was responsible or might have contributed in whatever way to book, will not only bring this unfortunate incident to a closure for the family, but will also serve as deterrent to other juvenile delinquents in all schools in Nigeria.
We, therefore, say justice for Sylvester is justice for all.
On our part as parents, we will work more closely with the school (management/board) to ensure that necessary measures are put in place to prevent recurrence of this unfortunate incident and stamp out bullying in any form from the school.
We will also continue to appeal to parents, through all available means, to show more interest in what their children do and who they associate with in school and at home.
We appeal to the public to see this incident as an inflection point, not only for Dowen College but also other schools in Nigeria, as recent events have shown that bullying, molestation and other vices among students are common in our schools.
Therefore, we rely on the authorities for justice regardless of the social status of whoever is involved.
Dowen College parents need this more, as we are currently in a fix and our children traumatised.
What happened to Sylvester could have happened to any other child in the school. To many of the traumatised students, Sylvester was a classmate, a roommate, a schoolmate or a friend.
We, therefore, earnestly ask for a resolution that will bring some relief to the bereaved family, other parents, students of Dowen College and the public.
These should include a change of the school management and hostel teachers, installation of Closed Circuit Television cameras in all strategic places and overhauling of the school security system.
The Parents’ Forum is organising a candle light on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 by 6pm at Dowen College, 18, Adebayo Doherty Road, Lekki, Lagos State.
The lighting of candles is to pay tribute to a life ‘passed’, and keeping the light burning signifies that the memory still lives on and burns bright.
The candle light, no doubt, shall promote reflection and signifies remembrance of a life cut short in its infancy.
We pray the Almighty God to comfort the Oromoni family during this trying period

Rio Ferdinand says Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw might struggle under Ralf Rangnick
Wan-Bissaka was on the bench against Crystal Palace on Sunday, having just returned from an injury layoff while Shaw was sidelined due to a head injury. Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles replaced the duo in the United line-up and performed admirably in the win over Palace.
Ferdinand believes that Wan-Bissaka and Shaw will struggle under Rangnick as the tactician prefers ball-playing defenders, an advantage that Dalot and Telles have over the sidelined duo.
Ferdinand said on FIVE YouTube channel: “I’ve got to be honest, Wan-Bissaka has got a hell of a job getting back in this team. The same for Luke Shaw. They’ve both got one hell of a job. One thing this manager likes is full-backs who can actually play and get on the ball.
Ferdinand explained that being good in the defensive phase is not good enough for a defender under Rangnick, as the 63-year-old manager prefers full-backs who can give a steady output on the ball also.
“As well as doing the other stuff like pressing, he wants output with the ball. That’s the weakest part of Wan-Bissaka’s game, there’s going to be a big fight for him to get back into this team,” the football pundit noted.
Rangnick got up to a good start in his United career, nicking a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace courtesy of a Fred winner. The Red Devils are next in action on Wednesday 8th December against Swiss side Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League, having already qualified for the Round of 16.
Spider-Man: across the spider verse is the two-part sequel we’ve been anticipating
This sequel will see the return of Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy and Johnson as Peter Parker. In addition to these returning characters, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will also include Issa Rae as Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Voltron: Legendary Defender), Kemp Powers (One Night in Miami), and Justin K. Thompson (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs). The sequel will be written by David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie).
In the teaser, Miles is listening to “Sunflower” — the hit track by Post Malone and Swae Lee. Miles has no idea there’s a multi-dimension portal open above him, through which Gwen Stacy is staring at him. Gwen says, “is this the room you grew up in?” Miles tries to play it off by hiding items that are not very “adult” before Gwen glances upon his drawings in a book. She thinks they are good, but her face changes after she spots one of herself. After the awkward moment, Gwen invites the grounded Miles Morales/Spider Man to see firsthand the villain and plot ahead of them.

Troops prevent IPOB/ESN from attacking 2 Imo communities, defuses IEDs
Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Enugu.
Nwachukwu said that the group targeted people of the two communities for refusing to observe its illegal “sit-at-home’’ order for Monday, Dec. 6.
“The swift response of troops compelled the attackers, mounted on two Sienna Buses and a Toyota Hilux truck to abandon their mission and withdraw in disarray.
“Troops are currently on the trail of the criminals,’’ he stated.
The army spokesman said that in a separate development, troops uncovered four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by members of IPOB/ESN on Orlu-Owerri Road.
“Vigilant troops, who were on a reinforcement mission to Mgbidi/Awo-Mmama detected the IEDs planted at about 15 meters apart on both sides of the road and safely defused them.
“No casualty was recorded during the diffusion.
“The troops also recovered four wraps of unexploded ordnances, one motorcycle battery, two vehicle alarm devices, one detonator, wires and batteries.
“The road has been safely cleared and motorists have resumed plying the road,’’ he added.
Nwachukwu urged all law-abiding citizens to go about their normal businesses and disregard the illegal “sit-at-home’’ order by the proscribed group.
“We appeal to the good people of Mgbidi, Awo-Mmama and Omuma to report any suspected member of the irredentist group, who may be seeking a safe haven, to relevant security agencies,’’ he stated.
