Over 90% of police officers in barracks don’t have befitting accommodation – IGP

Over 90% of police officers in barracks don?t have befitting accommodation - IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba has lamented over lack of befitting accomdation for over 90% of police officers in barracks.

In his speech at the quarter four 2021 public private partnership units consultative (3PUCF) meeting organised by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) in Abuja on Thursday December 2, the IGP who was represented by Zanna Ibrahim, deputy inspector-general (DIG), logistics and supply stated that the police force is in dire need of befitting accommodation to enable them tackle the art and act of policing the nation optimally.

Baba said;

“It will surprise you to know that with a workforce of over 350,000 in staff strength, the NPF has less than 10 percent of its personnel quartered in befitting barracks accommodation.

“The state of disrepair and integrity failure in our barracks need no emphasis and we are really in dire need of befitting accommodation to enable us tackle the art and act of policing the nation optimally.

“Suffice to add that there is an ongoing initiative to recruit 10,000 constables for the next six years annually, thereby increasing the housing needs for police officers.”

The IGP also averred that in spite of the decay in police infrastructure, negative maintenance culture, years of neglect due to poor budgetary allocation, destruction of police facilities resulting from the #EndSARS protests, banditry, Boko Haram/IPOB activities, the force remains resolute in following due process based on extant laws in the pursuit of infrastructural development through PPP.

Kaduna state government sacks 233 teachers for presentation of fake certificates

The Kaduna state government has dismissed 223 teachers from public service for tendering fake certificates when they were employed in the service.

Disclosing this to newsmen, Tijjani Abdullahi, chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB), at a press conference held today Thursday, December 2, said the fake certificates were detected during a certificate verification exercise which started in April 2021.

Tijanni said the major objective of the verification exercised was to ensure that all teachers in the state have the requisite credentials that constitute the basic qualifications for employment as teachers. He pointed out that so far, the board has verified 451 certificates by contacting the institutions that awarded the certificates. Nine of the 13 institutions contacted have responded.

”The responses from the institutions show that 233 teachers presented fake certificates. This represents 51% of the 451 certificates on which responses have been received from the awarding institutions. One institution disowned 212 of these 233 fake certificates.

The Board will dismiss the 233 teachers who presented these fake certificates, while their files will be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice to initiate prosecution for forgery. The Board will continue to check the integrity of the certificates presented by teachers to ensure that this critical profession is not devalued by impostors.

As part of our duty of transparency, the names of the 233 teachers found to have presented fake certificates will be uploaded on the website of the Kaduna State Government today”he said

He disclosed that the state will be conducting another competency test for teachers soon.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘may face questioning as part of their investigation into Juventus’ financial dealings’

Cristiano Ronaldo could face questioning as part of the ongoing investigation by Italian authorities into Juventus’ financial and transfer dealings.

The club’s offices in Turin and Milan were raided by police last Friday with player contracts, invoices, and financial statements taken as evidence.

The operation was carried out over claims that Juventus falsely recorded the values of transfers between 2019 and 2021 to enable them to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Italian authorities took documents relating to transfers, invoices, and financial statements with six Juventus officials – including club president Andrea Agnelli and vice-president Pavel Nedved under investigation, as well as Juventus itself.

Fabio Paratici, who was Juve’s sporting director before taking up a similar role with Tottenham last summer, is also under investigation. A probe by Italy’s football watchdog COVISOC and finance regulator Consob has already been opened.

In a report by Sportsmail earlier this week, the £47million deal for Cristian Romero to Tottenham in August,  the same day he left Juventus for Atalanta for just £13.5m,  is one of 42 transfers being scrutinised by police amid claims of false accounting.

Now Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport has claimed the Turin Public Prosecutor could question Manchester United striker Ronaldo as part of the probe.

Its alleged prosecutors are looking into a ‘secret’ agreement Ronaldo struck with Juventus during his time there that could relate to the amount of salary he deferred at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic or severance pay he received before leaving for Old Trafford this summer.

Reports in Italy claim there are recordings of phone calls where Juventus directors talk about a ‘document that should not have theoretically existed’ in relation to Ronaldo, but investigators are yet to find the document in question.

The Juventus directors who have been questioned by prosecutors so far have also reportedly failed to explain the nature of the deal that was struck with Ronaldo, who scored 101 goals in 134 appearances for the Italian giants.

The prosecutors in the case are willing to speak to Ronaldo about the matter in the hope the forward can clear up the ‘secret’ agreement and are considering summoning him back to Italy through his agent – GestiFute’s Jorge Mendes.

Meghan Markle speaks out after court victory, slams ‘deception and intimidation’

Meghan Markle has spoken out after her court victory over the Mail on Sunday.

The Duchess of Sussex sued Associated Newspapers Limited  – the publisher of The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline –  over five articles that reproduced parts of a “personal and private” letter to her father Thomas Markle Sr., 77, in August 2018

The newspaper today, Dec. 2, lost its appeal against a summary judgement which ruled the paper breached Meghan’s privacy by publishing a letter she had written to her estranged dad Thomas Markle.

The duchess won her case earlier this year when a High Court judge ruled in her favour without a full trial. But the publisher brought an appeal and, at a three-day hearing in November, argued the case should go to a trial on Meghan’s claims against the publisher – including breach of privacy and copyright.

Three senior judges handed down their decision on that appeal at 10am today, Dec. 2, in which the appeal was dismissed.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Meghan said: “This is a victory not just for me, but for anyone who has ever felt scared to stand up for what’s right.”

Her statement continued: “From day one, I have treated this lawsuit as an important measure of right versus wrong.

“The defendant has treated it as a game with no rules.

“The longer they dragged it out, the more they could twist facts and manipulate the public (even during the appeal itself), making a straightforward case extraordinarily convoluted in order to generate more headlines and sell more newspapers – a model that rewards chaos above truth.

“In the nearly three years since this began, I have been patient in the face of deception, intimidation and calculated attacks.”

The statement added: “The courts have held the defendant to account and my hope is that we all begin to do the same.

CHECK THIS:  Family announce date for burial of veteran actor Baba Suwe

“Because as far removed as it may seem from your personal life, it’s not. Tomorrow it could be you.

“These harmful practices don’t happen once in a blue moon – they are a daily fail that divide us and we all deserve better.”

Giving a summary of the Court of Appeal’s decision to dismiss, Sir Geoffrey Vos said: “The Court of Appeal upheld the judge’s decision that the duchess had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the contents of the letter.

“Those contents were personal, private and not matters of legitimate public interest.

“The articles in the Mail on Sunday interfered with the duchess’ reasonable expectation of privacy and were not a justified or proportionate means of correcting inaccuracies about the letter.”

“My father fortified me with charms before I moved to Lagos”- Convicted robber says

A traffic robber arrested by the Decoy Team of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in a sting operation around Otedola Bridge and Ojodu – Berger, last week Friday, November 26, has disclosed that his father fortified him with charms before leaving the village for Lagos.

The convicted robber, Samuel Adetomi (18) was arrested at Otedola Bridge by RRS team in traffic. He was in the company of about four other suspects, trying to rob a motorist when he was arrested. While his three other colleagues who sighted the plain cloth officers on time escaped, Adetomi couldn’t make out of the scene on time, hence, his arrest.

It took more than six policemen to subdue and handcuff him at the scene. When interrogated, he revealed that he sells bottled water in traffic and robs at night, adding that he sleeps under Ojodu – Berger footbridge at night. He added that the several diagonal incisions all over his body as well as the ring found on his toe were part of the fortification with charms his father made him go through before leaving Abeokuta for Lagos.

The operation was part of the festive period’s sting operation ordered by Commander, Rapid Response squad (RRS), CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi in selected spots within the metropolis, to stem the incidences of traffic robbery.
