2023: The North Has Been Marginalized, Atiku Deserves Presidency – Dokpesi

The Chairman Emeritus of DAAR Communications Plc, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, has highlighted some reasons why former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar should be trusted with the leadership of the country come 2023.

Naija News reports that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP chieftain while canvasing support for the Adamawa State-born politician during a courtesy visit to Forum’s secretariat, in Abuja, on Tuesday said that their support for the ex-VP’s presidential ambition was borne out of his laudable achievements.

Dokpesi said that Abubakar deserves the seat of power considering his achievements particularly in the areas of governance, youth empowerment as well as ethnic and religious tolerance, among others.

He also told the Forum that a vote of confidence has been passed in Atiku, stressing that Nigerians want him to contest for president in 2023.

Dokpesi said: “The challenges we are facing today as a country are complicated. The hope of the younger generation is dashed. Our hospitals are rather described as graveyards right now. Our schools are closed and we have over 14 million children out of school.

“Today, you hear agitations for the dismemberment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Those agitations are coming from all sections of the country. The economy, I dare also say, is in shambles right now.

“All these put together are created by the type of leadership we have in the country. They are a result of how we have organized and managed ourselves. They were not made by God

“Therefore, looking at the challenges that we have, we conducted some polls across the nation, bearing in mind the circumstances that we are experiencing in the country.”

“We asked Nigerians: How do we get out of this quagmire? For me, Nigeria must remain united. There are no insurmountable problems, and cannot be resolved.

“So, if we want to resolve the matter, I am going to call on this Forum to, in the interest of this country and the generations yet unborn to make the necessary sacrifice and view the situation dispassionately and not based on sentiments.

“We have set out the criteria, and have identified the issues, and said that the kind of leadership we need in this country must be a courageous, fair, tested and proven leadership with cognate experience in the management of the affairs of the conclusion, rightly or wrongly, that the person that has the quality to unite Nigeria at this point in time is Waziri Atiku Abubakar.

“We must put a square peg in a square hole. We must not allow some people who want to disintegrate this country to succeed,” he said.

CHECK THIS:  Proud parents pictured with their world record-breaking nine babies [photos]

The media mogul maintained that he was supporting a northern presidency in the 2023 elections because they had been marginalised with the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua in 2010.

Dokpesi argued that it will not be fair and just should power return to the South in 2023, even though the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari would have done eight years.

According to him, his support for the northern presidency was in line with the PDP agreement during the party’s convention in 2006.

He said, “2023 is still the turn of the North based on the PDP agreement and calculation. The records of the PDP are there. Some people said why should we bring a Fulani man again, and I said have we not been living with Fulani people? I was brought up by a Fulani man, Bamanga Tukur.

“Nigerians must unite and deal with elements brought into the country for destabilisation. We are here to plead and cry to the leaders of North Central not to relent in their sacrifices for the country.”

Slamming Travel Ban On Nigeria Unfair – Govs Tell Canada, UK

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has described as unfair, the decision of the Canadian and United Kingdom governments to slam a travel ban on Nigeria due to discovered cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

Naija News reports that the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.

Recall that the United Kingdom on Saturday banned all flights from Nigeria following the three cases of the Omicron Variant detected in the country.

This is coming after the Canadian government also imposed a travel ban on Nigeria after detecting the variant from travellers who landed in the country from Nigeria.

According to the governors, the action of the Canadian and British governments was biased and discriminatory, calling on the two foreign countries to immediately lift the ban.

The 36 governors added that Nigeria does not deserve the punishment despite detecting six cases of the variant in the country.

They, however, urged the World Health Organisation (WHO) to resolve the impasse by setting uniform standards that are acceptable to all for banning countries across the world.

The statement reads: “The NGF viewed the action by Canada and UK as precipitate, unfair and discriminatory. We urge the WHO to intervene in this matter by setting uniform standards that are acceptable to all for banning countries across the globe.

“Omicron still remains relatively unknown globally as it is not yet clear whether it is more transmissible from person to person compared to other variants including Delta.

CHECK THIS:  Nigeria participates in 60th anniversary of First Conference of Non-Aligned Countries

“It is very discouraging to note that there are several countries that have reported cases of Omicron similar to or higher than Nigeria’s, that have not been banned from entry to the UK and/Canada.

“Confirmed Omicron cases as of December 3rd, across some countries are: Nigeria (3 ); Australia (7); Brazil (3); Germany (9) Israel(4); Italy (9) and Netherlands(16). There is also no evidence that harsh, blanket travel bans will protect the countries that impose them.

“It is ironical that this ban comes at a time when the DG of the WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus, has advised that ‘rational proportional risk reduction measures’ be taken by countries such as screening passengers prior to departure and/or upon arrival in a country, or enforcing a quarantine period.

“As we know, vaccine hesitancy is quite high and for many reasons including disruptive announcements like this which could exacerbate distrust of the vaccine and heighten hesitancy.

“World leaders and stakeholders in the West need to remember that with the COVID-19 pandemic, until everyone is free, no one is free. Variants will continue to appear and spread across the globe as long as global herd immunity has not been achieved.

“We call on countries to be guided by science and fairness in setting the criteria for updating their red list. We encourage both public and private stakeholders to continue to support vaccination efforts and address hesitancy. We encourage Nigerians not to be discouraged and to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

“As a platform for the 36 democratically elected governors of the country, the NGF believes it reserves the right to speak for its people. Besides, the NGF was proactive and ahead in the Polio eradication program in Nigeria, in the country’s response to the Ebola virus, and lately in the response against the Coronavirus pandemic.
