DPO’s head broken during clash between students of two secondary schools in Ogun

A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Alimeke Ignatius, was left with a broken head during a clash between some secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

It was gathered that students of Egba Comprehensive High School and Asero High School in Abeokuta engaged one another in a free for all on Monday November 22.

The students hurled stones and other missiles at themselves, blocked the main road, grounding vehicular traffic and causing tension among the residents of the area.

Alimeke, the DPO of of Obantoko Division, led his men to the scene to quell the violence only to be attacked by the rampaging students.

The students reportedly hauled stones at the operatives, which hit the DPO on the head.

Alimeke sustained a grievous injury on his head and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident on Wednesday, said the students engaged in a fight and the police from the Obantoko station were called to take charge of the situation.

“The DPO was hit by stones. The students were throwing stones and other objects at themselves during the fight,” Oyeyemi said, adding that no arrest was made.

“We cannot arrest the students because they are minors. We can only detain and counsel them, after which they will be released.” the PPRO said.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has condemned the attack, describing it as “uncivilized and unwarranted”.

The state Chairman of PCRC, Samson Kunle Popoola, in a statement signed by his media aide, Babatunde Odeyemi, lamented the public disorder by secondary school students in the state.

“If this is not quickly checked, it may portray a great danger for the future of this country.” he stated.

Update: Borussia Dortmund star, Jude Bellingham fined £34,000 over comments he made about referee Felix Zwayer’s match-fixing

Jude Bellingham has been fined £34,000 for his controversial comments about referee Felix Zwayer but escaped a ban.

A furious Bellingham did not hold back in his post-match TV interview after Dortmund’s Der Klassiker defeat by Bayern Munich.

After the match Bellingham let rip at Zwayer, making comments that are now being investigated by police after a criminal complaint was filed, according to Sky Germany.

Bellingham will be free to play in Dortmund’s game at Bochum on Saturday after the club and player accepted the punishment handed down by the German FA on Tuesday. The teenager is believed to earn around £42,000 a week.

A statement read: ‘The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) fined Jude Bellingham 40,000 euros in single judge proceedings after the DFB control committee had brought charges for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

‘The player of Borussia Dortmund has already agreed to the judgement and the judgement is now final.’

Bellingham appeared to refer to Zwayer’s six month ban in 2005 for accepting a €300 bribe from fellow referee Robert Hoyzer, the main architect of the match-fixing scandal.

German legend Lothar Matthaus has backed Bellingham, saying emotions must have been running high following the defeat and asked how an 18-year-old English player came to know so much about a match-fixing scandal that happened when he was still a baby.

CHECK THIS:  Court awards £15,000 to pregnant wife who was sacked from work by her husband because she found his receipts for s3x services

Writing for Sky Sport Deutschland, Matthaus said: ‘Yes, Jude Bellingham’s words were out of place. Today, he might not say the same thing.

‘But I can understand his frustration and anger right after the game is over. The adrenaline and emotions are very difficult to control when losing such an important game to controversial decisions. But you don’t have to overdo it.

‘As far as I’m concerned, he should donate a fine to a charitable cause and it’s done with.

‘Anyway, I wonder how and 18-year-old English player knows Mr Zwayer’s past so well? Who gave him this before the interview?’

Surrogacy without a known father is Abnormal – Delta state gov’s aide, Ossai Success, says

An aide to the Delta state, Ossai Ovie Success, is of the opinion that having surrogacy without a known father is abnormal. He shared this thought on his Facebook page.

Read what he wrote below…

”Surrogacy without a known father is Abnormal

A lot of things are going wrong in our society and we are celebrating it in public but condemning it in private .

I heard she gave birth through surrogate without a known father and people are congratulating her and making it look like she did the best thing.

No matter how wealthy you are as a mother , your child needs a father and should be aware of where his father came from.

I am not against Surrogacy but I am against surrogacy without a known father.

We must also becareful when we are into surrogacy.

Making it known to the general public will end up damaging the child reputation.

So I see no reason why we should let the public known of such thing.

My name is Ossai Ovie Success”

Messi should be sincere, not just give empty words’ – Ballon d’Or runner-up Robert Lewandowski knocks winner for his speech

Robert Lewandowski has knocked Lionel Messi over his tribute towards him at the 2021 Ballon d’Or ceremony, labeling his rival’s comments ’empty words’.

Messi, 34, controversially beat Lewandowski, 33, to the 2021 prize, with many fans and pundits stating that the Polish striker was more deserving of the award.

The Bayern Munich striker was the standout performer of 2020 and was denied the Ballon d’Or that year as it was cancelled due to Covid.

In his acceptance speech, Messi acknowledged that Lewandowski deserved the prize for 2020, and called on event organisers France Football to retrospectively hand the Pole his gong.

‘Last year everyone agreed that you were the winner and I think that France Football should give you the Ballon d’Or that you deserve,’ he said.

However, the 33-year-old was unconvinced by Messi’s comments, labelling them ’empty words’ before insisting that he does not care for a token reward.

CHECK THIS:  Thierry Henry explains why Lionel Messi is struggling at new club PSG

‘I’m not that enthusiastic about getting the 2020 award,’ Lewandowski told Kanale Sportowym via Marca.

‘I would like it [Messi’s 2020 Ballon d’Or statement] to be a sincere and courteous statement from a great player and not just an empty words.’

Reflecting on last week’s near-miss, Lewandowski said: ‘I felt sadness. I can’t deny it.

‘I can’t say I was happy, on the contrary. I have a feeling of sadness. To be so close, to compete with Messi, of course, I respect how he plays and what he has achieved. The mere fact that I was able to compete with him shows me the level that I was able to reach.’

Lewandowski has scored 130 goals in 108 games since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, and him missing out of the top prize will serve as motivation for his Bayern Munich team-mates, Thomas Muller revealed.

‘From the Bavarian, Polish, and also German point of view, last night’s Ballon d’Or award ceremony was definitely a disappointment, for some even a bit more,’ Muller said in the wake of the result.

‘Although I’ve been in the business a bit longer and therefore wasn’t really surprised about the outcome (it was similar with Franck Ribéry in 2013), the whole thing has formed or once again solidified a thought in me: We have great players in the Bundesliga and don’t have to hide.

‘For worldwide recognition, however, we need more international successes. That’s a huge motivation for me, too, to put everything on the line to bring the Champions League back to Munich and show the soccer world what’s what.

‘And above all, what German soccer has to offer. The next opportunity to do so will be next Wednesday at the Champions League match against FC Barcelona. Let’s go for it!’

Bauchi Assembly passes vote of no confidence on commissioner over alleged disrespect

Bauchi Assembly passes vote of no confidence in commissioner for alleged disrespect

A vote of no confidence has been passed on Bauchi state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Tilde, by members of the state house of assembly.

The lawmakers confirmed Tilde’s nomination as commissioner earlier, but withdrew it over an alleged disrespect.

This ensued after adoption of a motion moved by Chairman, House Committee on Education and member representing Hardawa Constituency, Babayo Mohammed, under matters of urgent public importance during Monday’s plenary.

Mohammed described Tilde’s conduct during last Friday’ defence as “unfortunate and disrespectful.” He noted that even though  the commissioner was late for the hearing, he was allowed in but responded with uncomplimentary remarks while addressing committee members.

He said;

“While we were trying to explain ourselves to him, he interfered and enquired who we are. We told him we are legislature and another arm of government, but he kept asking who we are.

“The legislature is one of the three arms of government, so for him to ask us who we are; this is an insult to the 9th Assembly.

“Therefore, we asked him to go when he realized we are something, he should come back for the defence because, we have eight days from today to end the budget defence proceedings.”

The House adopted the committee’s report and its recommendations which included allowing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education to continue with the budget defence.

Sylvester Oromoni: ”We will work closely with the school management to prevent a reoccurrence of this unfortunate incident”- Dowen college parents forum breaks its silence

The Parents Forum at Dowen College in Lagos has broken its silence since the unfortunate incident of the death of an 11-year-old student of the school, Sylvester Oromoni.

In a statement signed by Aituaz Kola-Oladejo, Waheed Adeoye, Oluwaseun Bolanle Ajila, and Kingsley Kema Agu, and released on Tuesday, December 7, the parents stated that what happened to Sylvester “could have happened to any other child in the school.” They expressed deep sadness over the unfortunate incident and extended their condolence to the family of late Oromoni.

The parents in the statement said they will work more closely with the school (management/board), to ensure necessary measures are put in place to prevent a reoccurrence of this unfortunate incident and stamp out bullying in any form from the school. They also urged the school authorities to mount CCTV cameras in the school premises.

Read the statement below…

“Dowen College Parents are startled and deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident that led to the death of Sylvester Oromoni. Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and pray that God gives them the strength to bear the irreparable loss.

CHECK THIS:  Thierry Henry explains why Lionel Messi is struggling at new club PSG

As parents of Dowen college students, we are still in shock and could not come to terms with this incident and the accounts so far provided by the school, students, and the media.

We urge the school management team and other stakeholders (students and parents directly or indirectly mentioned) to fully cooperate with the authority in the ongoing investigation.

While we would have loved to bring Sylvester back if humanly possible, unravelling the cause of Sylvester’s death and bringing whoever was responsible or might have contributed in whatever way to book, will not only bring this unfortunate incident to a closure for the family, but this will also serve as a deterrent to others in all schools in Nigeria.

CHECK THIS:  10 protesters reportedly shot dead by security forces in Sudan capital as thousands protest against Military coup

We therefore say justice for Sylvester, is justice for all. On our part as parents, we will work more closely with the school (management/board), to ensure necessary measures are put in place to prevent a reoccurrence of this unfortunate incident and stamp out bulling in any form from the school.

We therefore earnesly ask for a resolution that will bring some relief to the bereaved family, other parents, students of Dowen College and the public.

These should include a change of the school management and hostel teachers, installation of CCTV cameras in all strategic places and overhauling of the school security system.

The Parents’ Forum is organising a Candle Light event. Details of which are as follow: Wednesday, December 8, 6pm; Dowen College. The lighting of candles is to pay tribute to a life ‘passed’ and keeping the light burning signifies that the memory still lives on and burns bright.”

Man who stabbed his partner 7 times in the face for trying to leave him after she won lottery is jailed for 18 years

A man has been sentenced to 18 years in jail after he stabbed his partner seven times in the face when she tried to end their relationship after her £5.5million lottery win.

Stephen Gibbs, 45, attacked Emma Brown, his girlfriend of 11 years, at the luxury home they shared in Lakeside in Barry, south Wales on January 30, 2021.

The couple’s relationship had deteriorated after she won a multimillion-pound sum on the National Lottery in 2017.

Winning made her financially independent of her partner. But Gibbs wouldn’t let her fulfil her dream.

Flooring contractor Gibbs turned down Emma’s dreams of travelling the world on her winnings and instead became possessive, controlling, and jealous.

Gibbs became increasingly paranoid and controlling of his partner, so he fitted a tracking device to her car. The device was only discovered after the attack.

He became suspicious that Emma was cheating on him with former school friend Scott McKenzie, a tenant in a property bought with her lottery winnings.

Gibbs accused her of seeing Mr Mackenzie, 48, behind his back and had threatened to “cut his throat”.

He accused Emma of being with Mr McKenzie on January 30 after she called to see one of her cleaners to deliver a birthday card.

Emma denied the accusation and Gibbs became violent. He then grabbed her around the neck, slammed her against the wall, breaking her arm, before going to the kitchen to grab a nine-inch kitchen knife, which he stabbed her with multiple times.

The defendant initially denied attempted murder, but changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial in September.

CHECK THIS:  Manchester City star, Jack Grealish given shocking ultimatum by his girlfriend to choose between her and the actress he went on a secret date with

Gibbs was previously jailed for six years for stabbing a former partner’s 11-year-old son six times with a kitchen knife.

At his sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Monday, Dec. 6, Prosecutor Ieuan Bennett said: “Gibbs became a changed person in 2017 when Ms Brown had the good fortune of winning the national lottery.

“It was a significant amount of money and meant she could become financially independent of the defendant.

“This altered the nature of the balance of their relationship and it caused arguments between the two of them.”

Bennet said at the sentencing: “The victim started dating the defendant in 2010.

“The dynamics of the relationship changed permanently when in 2017 she had the good fortune of winning the National Lottery and in fact won a considerable amount of money.”

Mr Bennett said: “It seems the defendant had more of an issue of her being in control of her own life.”

He continued: “She had dreams of travelling the world but due to the fact the defendant didn’t like travelling abroad she never realised these dreams, and that must have caused some difficulties with their relationship.”

Narrating what transpired on the day Gibbs accused Emma of visiting her former school friend Scott McKenzie, Mr Bennett said: “It was an innocent visit but when she got home Gibbs questioned her about where she had been.

“He was jealous and worried about her past and there was a mention of Macca, which was Mr McKenzie’s nickname.

CHECK THIS:  I would have burnt down the school by now if I'm the mother - Alaafin of Oyo's estranged wife Queen Ola reacts to Sylvester Oromoni's death

“He said: ‘I don’t believe you – you have been to see Macca’.”

Then Emma told Gibbs she wanted to break off their relationship and he attacked her.

Mr Bennett said: “He told her he was going to cut his own throat and she was trying to stop him when he turned his anger on her, still holding the knife.

“She was on the patio outside and can remember thinking she was going to be killed as the knife went into one of her eyes.

“She told Gibbs: ‘Tell my mother I love her’, as he stabbed her in the face from close-up seven times. She thought they were going to be her dying words.”

CCTV from Emma’s property, played in court, showed a silhouette of Gibbs sitting astride his girlfriend with his arm going up and down as he stabbed her in the face and head.

After the stabbing, Gibbs fled in Emma’s £80,000 Mercedes leaving his partner dying on the patio of their luxury £700,000 home bought with her winnings.

The court heard she only survived because neighbours heard groaning coming from the property and a faint call for help.

Gibbs was found later five miles away after taking a load of tablets in a bid to kill himself.

On Monday, Dec. 6, Gibbs showed no emotion as he was jailed for 13 years and given a five year extended sentence. He was also made the subject of a restraining order preventing him from contacting Emma indefinitely.

Sacking Gernot Rohr may jeopardise Super Eagles’ AFCON 2021 chances – Former Super Eagles player, Henry Nwosu

Former Nigerian midfielder, Henry Nwosu has admonished the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to be mindful of their decision to sack Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles coach as it’s just weeks to the commencement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The performance of the Super Eagles in the group stage of the World Cup qualifiers has called into question the tactical nous of its German tactician with many critics believing the Eagles will lose against much solid and tactically astute teams.

There have been reports that the NFF is considering sacking Rohr but Nwosu has now warned that sacking Rohr may jeopardise Nigeria’s chances of succeeding at AFCON 2021.

The 1980 AFCON said to Complete Sports;

“Although I am not impressed with the display of the Super Eagles in recent games under Gernot Rohr, however, that doesn’t warrant the Nigeria Football Federation to call for his sack when the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is just around the corner.

“Come to think of it, will sacking Rohr now make the team win the AFCON title? The truth is, this is not the best time to embark on such decision. Such decision may affect the players psychologically in terms of performance considering the fact that the players are more connected to him.”

Former Germany international defender, Rohr has led the Super Eagles in 54 international matches, which makes him the country’s longest serving coach. He has coached the team for five years now.

Court nullifies dismissal of Army General

Court nullifies dismissal of Army General

The dismissal of Brigadier General A.S.H. Sa’ad in 2016, has been nullified by an industrial court sitting in Abuja.

Premium Times had reported that Mr Sa’ad and 37 other officers were forced out of service without recourse to the rules of disengagement in the Nigerian military. It was reported that they “were neither queried nor indicted by any panel, but got flushed out for reasons that smack of high-level arbitrariness and witch-hunting by authorities of the army.”

They sought for redress in court after getting no response from a petition addressed to President Buhari.

Delivering judgement on Sa’ad’s case, Justice Benedict Kanyip declared that the claimant was never compulsorily retired because the Army did not prove that Mr Sa’ad did any wrong.

Kanyip who added that the prayer for reinstatement cannot be granted beyond 2019 when he was supposed to have attained 35 years of service, refused to grant the request of the complaint that he should be promoted to the rank of major general just like his peers until they retired in 2019.

The Judge also declared that his promotion cannot be done orally adding that by law, it is not a right but a privilege.

Kanyip said;

“The retirement of the claimant dated 9th June 2016 is in contravention of the armed forces act and condition of service is null and void.

“The defendant shall reinstate the claimant as a brigadier general of the Nigerian Army up to 2019.

“Be paid his salary from the date of his sack to the date he ought to have retired in 2019.”

Indiana Pastor allegedly ‘relieved of pastoral duties’ for appearing in drag on HBO’s ‘We’re Here’

Indiana Pastor allegedly 'relieved of pastoral duties' for appearing in drag on HBO's We're Here

An Indiana Pastor has allegedly been “relieved of pastoral duties” after appearing in drag last month on HBO’s Emmy-nominated docuseries We’re Here.

A GoFundMe page has now been created for Pastor Craig Duke by community members in Evansville, Indiana, after he demonstrated his progressive and accepting attitude toward queer and non-binary people, including his pansexual daughter, by dressing up in drag in the episode.

A statement on the GoFundMe page read;

“Unfortunately, Craig’s participation in this show caused much turmoil in the church that he was serving at the time and ultimately lead to him being ‘relieved of pastoral duties’ at that church.

“Craig will continue with a significantly reduced salary until no later than February 28. Obviously, this poses a major challenge to Craig and his family as they determine their next steps.”

Duke was further described as “a man of faith, a father, a husband, a social justice advocate, and ally for the LGBTQIA+ community who has fought for a fully inclusive church that is welcoming to people of all races, all genders, and all sexual orientations.”

News of Pastor Duke allegedly being “relieved” of his duties, was first reported by Queerty, followed by The Advocate, and it has caused several stars of We’re Here to react.

Drag queens Eureka! and Shangela, who both take part in the show’s central mission of visiting different parts of the country to help foster acceptance and safe spaces for queer individuals, have reacted to the report.

Eureka! tweeted;

“Craig is an amazing person and deserves the same love that he shares with everyone around him.

“Everyone met Pastor Craig a couple of weeks ago on the Evansville, IN episode of #WereHere Sadly his participation in the show has caused the Church to “relieve him of his pastoral duties.” If you can donate, great! If you can’t, please share!”

Indiana Pastor allegedly 'relieved of pastoral duties' for appearing in drag on HBO's We're Here 1

Shangela posted an impassioned video to Instagram on Monday, immediately after landing at LAX airport.

CHECK THIS:  ‘Nigerians living in Nigeria don’t know what God has done for them'- US-based artiste says

Shangela wrote that Pastor Craig “has been bullied by a large portion of his church congregation out of his role (or with relieved duties) because of his showcase of love for the LGBTQ+ community. Let’s take a stand.”

We’re Here co-creator Stephen Warren told PEOPLE that, while the creators “expected resistance” along the way, “we didn’t expect this to happen to Craig,” going on to describe how there were community members who took issue with him because he appeared in full drag.

Though Newburgh United Methodist Church in Evansville did not immediately respond to the report, the institution sent Queerty a copy of the letter that members of the Newburgh UMC were sent in November after the outlet published its report.

Mitch Gieselman, superintendent of the south and southwest district of the Indiana United Methodist Church in the letter said that much of the information concerning the status of Rev. Craig Duke that had been circulating “has been less than completely accurate.”

The letter read;

“No single resolution will be satisfactory to all. I’ve received numerous calls and emails that are highly critical of Craig’s actions, and I’ve received numerous messages of support for him. In such a polarized climate, our main intent is to foster an environment in which both NUMC and the Duke family can move forward in grace.

“Rev. Duke is being relieved from pastoral duties effective December 1, 2021. He will not be available to perform any pastoral functions at NUMC,” the statement read, adding that Duke and his wife Linda will be able “to reside in the parsonage until no later than February 28, 2022, but he will not be at the church in any capacity.

“Craig has not ‘resigned,’ nor has he been ‘fired,’ as these are not actions that are consistent with our appointment system. While there is a diversity of opinion regarding the moral implications of Rev. Duke’s actions, he has not been found to have committed any chargeable offense or other violation of the United Methodist Book of Discipline.

“In short, Craig has reached a place where he feels unable to continue to serve in parish ministry at present. During his time of being relieved from pastoral duties, he will be engaging in a process of renewal, reflection, and recovery,” the statement continued, later adding, “Our desire is to provide an opportunity for Craig to again be able to utilize his numerous gifts as a pastor in a local congregation. He will not, however, be returning to the NUMC pulpit.”

Pope France compares the EU to a ‘Nazi dictatorship’ for its attempts to impose ‘woke’ language rules and ban Christmas

Pope France compares the EU to a 'Nazi dictatorship' for its attempts to impose woke language rules and ban Christmas

Pope Francis has compared the EU to a ‘Nazi dictatorship’ for trying to impose woke rules on language and ban using the word Christmas.

The pope, 84, warned the bloc not to ‘take the path of ideological colonisation’ as he returned from Greece after a four-day trip.

Last week, the EU was accused of trying to ‘cancel Christmas’ after telling staff to avoid the word in favour of ‘holiday period’ because it could be offensive to non-Christians.

Eurocrats published the rule months ago as part of a guide on ‘inclusive communication’, details of which leaked, sparking outrage. Other suggestions in the book included replacing Christian names such as Mary and John with ‘international’ names such as Malika and Julio when using them in generic examples, and swapping the word ‘man-made’ for ‘human-induced’.

The pontiff said the language diktats, which the European Commissioner for Equality admitted ‘clearly needed more work’, ‘a fad, watered-down secularism’.

He said while on board the papal plane on return to the Vatican: ‘It is something that throughout history has not worked.

‘In history, many dictatorships have tried to do these things. I’m thinking of Napoleon, the Nazi dictatorship, the Communist one.’

CHECK THIS:  Ikoyi building collapse: Governor Sanwo-Olu declares 3-day mourning

He added that the EU is ‘necessary’ but it needs to avoid stirring up divisions among its member states.

He said: ‘The European Union… must be careful not to take the path of ideological colonisation. This could end up dividing countries and causing the EU to fail.

‘The European Union must respect each country’s internal structure, its variety and not try to make them uniform — I don’t think it will do that, it wasn’t its intention, but it must be careful, because sometimes they come and throw projects like this one out there.’

Last week’s EU document also told staff to ‘avoid assuming that everyone is Christian’ and that ‘not everyone celebrates the Christian holidays, and not all Christians celebrate them on the same dates’.

Instead of saying ‘Christmas time can be stressful’, staff were told to say ‘Holiday times can be stressful’.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, accused the EU of trying to ‘cancel our roots’ by ignoring – rather than respecting – Europe’s Christian heritage.

‘We know that Europe owes its existence and its identity to many influences, but we certainly cannot forget that one of the main influences, if not the main one, was Christianity itself,’ he told Vatican News.

Matteo Salvini, leader of Italy’s right-wing League party and former deputy Prime Minister, accused the EU of ‘folly’ by publishing the rules.

‘Mary, the mother. John, the father. Long live the holy Christmas … I hope that in Europe, no one will be offended,’ he tweeted.

Antonio Tajani, a former European Commissioner and ally of Silvio Berlusconi, also tweeted his criticism – suggesting the EU was waging war on ‘common sense’.

Helena Dalli, the EU’s equality commissioner who put together the guide as part of an equality agenda championed by Ursula von der Leyen, claimed it was a ‘draft document’ that would be revised after ‘a number of concerns were raised’.

‘We are looking into these concerns with the view of addressing them in an updated version of the guidelines,’ she added.
