The king argued that the continent was never conquered as it is popularly believed. He stated that Africans rather gave themselves up.

He said that he was the first king to apologise for slavery in England at the Commonwealth. Oba Abdulrasheed went further to say that the Europeans only came to the continent as explorers.

Sharing an illustrative narrative, he said the kings of the olden days used humans as a means of exchange for what they wanted to get from the white people.

He said:

“If white men really want slavery, do you think slavery would have been abolished. Slavery did not even taken 300 years.”

When Bisola wanted to know if what he meant was that slavery was a choice for Africans, replied “we sold our own children…”

He termed African heartless, saying the Indians, Chinese and Japanese never sold themselves out like Africans did.

Hard times ahead: Naira to crash to N600 per dollar this season as e-Naira app’s massive downloads continue

  • The physical naira is tumbling at both the official and parallel markets while its digital version is seeing a wide adoption
  • Experts say the naira may close the year at N600 per dollar as demands for forex mounts pressure on the naira due to the Yuletide season
  • Businessmen and other Nigerians hoard the dollar due to volatility and uncertainty which further pushes down the value of the naira

While the e-Naira is seeing massive and impressive downloads, the actual Naira is eroding in the official market.

On Monday, December 6, the actual Naira closed at N415 at the official Investors and Exports window.

What analysts say

Kelechi Mgboji, a business analyst, in an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, said the fall in naira value is expected especially during a Yuletide season. He said the pressure of demand by travellers on the dollar is pushing down the value of the Naira.

Mgboji said:

“Business people who import and they travel will mount pressure on the dollar. The more you have more people demanding the dollar, the lower the naira goes. If the dollar is scarce as it is in Nigeria, it will affect the naira.”

He said the true value of the Naira is in the parallel market and that people hoard the dollar due to uncertainty and the volatile economic climate in Nigeria.

The digital version of the Naira, the eNaira, has continued to coast home in popularity among Nigerians which has made its downloads soar to close to a million.

It has been downloaded 78,000 times in 160 countries as of the second week of November, reports say.

Naira falls against the dollar in official, parallel markets

Legit.ng reported that Naira’s depreciation against the dollar continues as both currencies closed at N410.13 to one dollar on Monday, against Friday’s N410/$1 at the official market, investors and exporters window.

This represents a N0.13kobo drop at the official market rate recognised by the Central Bank of Nigeria. However, during trading, naira hit a high of N412 to one dollar at the market.

At the black market, the Nigerian note had depreciated to N486 to one dollar at the end of trading on Monday, slumping below the N485 to a dollar recorded on Friday. This represents N1 difference.

Buhari’s reputation as democrat won’t change if he doesn’t sign electoral bill, Femi Adesina claims

  • President Muhammadu Buhari’s position as a democrat won’t change irrespective of his decision on electoral bill
  • According to Femi Adesina, the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) has been losing elections unlike past presidents
  • Recall that there have been speculations that the president may not sign the the electoral act amendment bill

President Muhammadu Buhari will always be regarded as a true democrat even if he does not assent to the electoral bill according to presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, The Cable Newspaper reports.

On November 19, Buhari received the electoral act amendment bill from the national assembly for his assent but he is yet to assent it.

INEC sends important message to President Buhari over electoral act amendment

Adesina who disclosed this in an interview with Channels Television, said Buhari has already created a reputation of “clean elections” for himself whether he signs the electoral bill or not.

He said:

“In terms of his image for democratic value, that image is made already. It is almost cast in concrete. You will find that one election after the other has been better under President Buhari,” he said.

“Under President Buhari, the governing party has lost — states, legislative seats and so many elections. It didn’t use to be. It used to be that whichever party was in power won all elections before by hook or crook; not under President Buhari.

“So, his reputation as somebody who wants to leave clean elections for Nigeria has already been made whether the electoral act is signed or not. It doesn’t distract from that reputation.”

Christmas token for coke: Influential APC senator confirms ongoing giveaway to Nigerians

  • A former Abia governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, is serious about his giveaway to some lucky, selected Nigerians
  • Via his Facebook page on Monday, December 4, Kalu noted that the number of those who will enjoy this act of kindness is 300
  • The APC senator, for clarity, explained that this ongoing exercise is a playful one, not an empowerment programme

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has spoken on his plans for a giveaway to Nigerians after the local football club, Enyimba, won its opponent on Saturday, December 4.

The Senate’s chief whip who did not disclose the amount to be given said the actual number of beneficiaries of this kind gesture is 300, adding that the selection process was rigorous.

He made it clear that this is nothing but a playful exercise and a token with which the beneficiaries can enjoy the Christmas holiday, not an empowerment initiative.

Kalu said:

“It has become important and necessary that I comment on the Saturday Giveaway. As you all could recall, the targeted number was 300 and it was meant to be a playful exercise. I didn’t expect everyone to be credited as 300 became almost invisible. I must, therefore, admit that selecting the beneficiaries overwhelmed me.

“The comments were about 50,000 and I even lost the trace of some comments I tried working on. Several people that were credited acknowledged while others did not; probably it’s their style and differences.

“Meanwhile, If you weren’t lucky last Saturday, you could be this coming Saturday. We shall also increase the number of beneficiaries. Please consider this as a playful exercise and as a Christmas token for coke, not empowerment.”
